Human Resources Student Association

MacKinnon and Laura Noseworthy
Candace
Morgan and Lynn Haley, two human resources instructors in the UNB
Faculty of Business Administration, were swamped with requests last
year from students wanting to be more ‘networked’ and
informed about the HR opportunities available in the region upon
graduation.
The
pair brainstormed ways in which they could play a larger role in
connecting their students with the local business community. The
result: A new Human Resources Student Association (HRSA) has been
formalized at UNB this year.
The
inaugural meeting for the group was held at the beginning of October
and the response was staggering: approximately forty five students
signed up. At the first meeting the executive for the Association
was elected and consists of three HR students in their final year
of the BBA program: Lynn MacKinnon (President), Kendra Leary
(Vice-President), and Scott Elvin (Treasurer). The President will
be sitting on the HRANB Executive for the Fredericton Chapter as
a Student Representative.
This
year, the HRSA will offer information sessions with guest speakers
from the
business community as well as study sessions for anyone interested
in getting their
CHRP designation. The HRSA executive will also plan other events
of interest to its
student members throughout the year.
The
HRSA Executive and Faculty Coordinators are very excited about this
new association and recognize the support students need to move
from the academic setting to the professional community. “Connecting
students with those working in the industry is a
win-win situation,” says Morgan. “It’s also important
for students to see the practical
side of HR, to complement the theoretical learning done in the classroom”.
The
HRSA is also open to alumni and members of the community who are
working in or have experience in HR. If you are interested in being
a part of this group and sharing some of your knowledge with current
HR students, the HRSA would love to hear from you. Please contact
Lynn at Lynn.Mackinnon@unb.ca.
