The First Annual Atlantic Human Resources Conference
TAKING FLIGHT, October 1 – 3, 2008, Moncton, New Brunswick

Taking Flight promises to take HR professionals in Atlantic Canada to a level of thinking that, until now, has not been explored at traditional human resource conferences. Taking Flight dares to identify and challenge the role HR professionals play in creating remarkable brands.

To be successful, today’s forward-thinking companies are taking strategic measures to ensure internal and external messaging is aligned. More and more companies are recognizing the value in how internal branding is being used to recruit and keep the best new employees. Taking Flight will mark a crossroads for Human Resource professionals looking to bridge gaps between external marketing and what happens on the front line in their own organization.

As the first annual conference supported by the three Atlantic Human Resources Associations, the Atlantic HR Conference offers the opportunity to expand on the success of the HR Association of Nova Scotia’s (HRANS) bi-annual conference success and to communicate and contribute between all three Atlantic associations. “We see this annual Atlantic Conference as a way to share and grow our knowledge, to network and to educate - not just ourselves, but our organizations - on why Human Resources is the defining element in their future successes,” says David Cannon, Member of the HRANB Executive and Conference Co-chair.

The conference will offer cutting edge keynote speakers, including Roy H. Williams and Don Schmincke. Roy H Williams will address the need for organizations to take the long-term view - to do the right thing spiritually, morally and financially - and how they need their senior HR executives to provide the guidance to define, achieve and maintain their guiding core values. Don Schmincke will offer his thoughts on leadership by guiding CEOs, COOs and senior HR executives to the alignment of their human resources in an effective manner - focused towards the true business needs. “Both keynote speakers will have a three hour opportunity to advance concepts that our members have not received in previous venues,” says David Cannon.

Rachelle Gagnon, President of the Human Resources Association of New Brunswick and Director of Human Resources with Assumption Life, adds “We wanted to offer participants the latest in topics and relevant material to HR these days. Instead of having keynote HR speakers that most HR professionals have heard many times, we wanted to give them an opportunity to see what is current and outside the box of traditional thinking.” Delegates will take home with them a greater knowledge on a variety of subjects from leadership to HR branding to operational HR topics as well as a clear understanding of what it takes to be a strategic partner. While there will always be a transactional side of HR, there is also a visionary side that must be articulated at the boardroom table to ensure the organization is both legally viable and ethically responsible, while managing their staff to achieve long-term success.

As David Cannon notes, “Today, with demographics and the business landscape shifting, HR professionals must be prepared to function at a higher level - to see ahead, envision the oncoming challenges, and then to be able to articulate effectively the messages that they must be able to successfully deliver to guide senior management.” Educational seminars at the Conference will attempt to provide skills to enable HR professionals at all levels of their organization to be more effective: both in envisioning the coming challenges, and in communicating effectively within their organizations.

“Our challenge as HR professionals will be how do we help organizations have the best qualified, motivated, high performing resources and how do we find, recruit, retain, train and create a work environment for employees that helps them be the best qualified, motivated and high performing employees that they have the potential to be,” says Rachelle Gagnon.

On October 1-3, 2008 join Taking Flight as Human Resources Professionals, CEOs and business executives, operational managers, service providers and HR partners from across Atlantic Canada meet in Moncton for an exceptional opportunity to learn from experts, share best practices and preview the latest supplier technology and tools to enhance business operations and client service delivery.
