Getting
HR ready for the future
This is an exciting time for HR professionals.
A
solid economy and an aging workforce have created a ‘hot market’
for the talent that organizations need to compete in the global
marketplace. By 2011, 100 percent of Canada’s net labour market
growth will depend on immigration. With the tightening of the labour
market and the increased reliance on immigration as a source for
scarce talent, HR leaders must be prepared to seize the opportunity
and ready their organizations.
The
Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations’ 2008 National
HR Forum, held March 25th and 26th 2008, brought together Canada’s
most senior-level Human Resource professionals and key government
officials to discuss key issues related to immigration and HR. Visit
www.cchra.ca
to review our Forum White Paper at the end of April for a summary
of the research presented during the Forum.
To
keep ahead of international trends, CCHRA has been collaborating
with our colleagues at the Society for Human Resources Management
(SHRM) in the United States, the North American Human Resources
Management Association (NAHRMA) and the World Federation of Personnel
Management Associations (WFPMA) on various research initiatives.
The
results of a joint CCHRA-SHRM survey on global talent sourcing were
presented at the National Forum. The CCHRA and our member provincial
HR Associations have also been working with the WFPMA and the Boston
Consulting Group on a global study on the Future of HR. The objective
of this research was to identify the most important HR topics for
2010-2015, to assess their current importance, to understand companies’
current capabilities with respect to these topics and to evaluate
possible actions companies could take in order to increase their
capabilities. Look out for these results later this spring.
Closer
to home, CCHRA has a number of critical projects on the go.
In
late 2007, the CCHRA Board of Directors approved the outcome of
a two-year process to update Canada’s HR Body of Knowledge.
The review included focus groups of business leaders and HR professionals
to identify how the profession is evolving, as well as a survey
of current CHRPs. Contact your provincial association for more information
on the updated Body of Knowledge and what it means for you.
I
would like to thank Diane Wiesenthal for her leadership over the
past two years. Diane has really laid the foundation to better position
the CCHRA as the national voice of the HR profession.
The
move of the CCHRA office from Toronto to Ottawa is now complete.
I would like to welcome three new staff members who have recently
come on board: Cheryl Lamerson, as Manager, Professional Standards;
Tanya O’Callaghan as Marketing and Communications Specialist;
and Kym Grenier as Board and Committee Secretary. They join Lynn
Palmer CEO and Stephanie Duff, Administrative Coordinator in rounding
out the CCHRA team.
The
CCHRA’s small, dynamic staff will be focusing on ensuring
the CHRP designation is delivered with excellence, that it reflects
current and future business needs, that we have an appropriate marketing
strategy in place and that we build the infrastructure required
for the longer term – all the while keeping the ongoing activities
moving forward.
I
look forward to working with the provincial HR associations as we
tackle the challenges ahead!
Merrill Brinton, CHRP
